Fully funded master position in Environmental Microbiology

Description

There is a fully funded MSc position available starting in early 2020 at the Soil and Water Research Infrastructure, Biology Centre CAS and University of South Bohemia in Ceske Budejovice. The selected candidate will work in environmental microbiology applying geochemical and molecular biology techniques for studying microbial functioning in the hypolimnion of a post-mining lake in Karlovy Vary, NW Czech Republic.

Funding is guaranteed for the entire length of the master (2 years).

Willing to advance our knowledge of the biogeochemical cycle of iron using the study site, lake Medard as proxy; see DOI: 10.1039/C8EM00328A

Additional comments

The selected candidate will be expected to conduct benchwork and analytical and experimental research in the area of genomics and computational biology/bioinformatics, with emphasis in data acquisition and analysis of next-generation sequencing. The researcher’s development will be enhanced through structured mentoring activities to provide the skills, knowledge and experience to prepare her/him to excel in her/his career path.

The selected candidate will be enrolled in the Master of Science programme at the University of South Bohemia (JU). The campus in Ceske Budejovice has a dynamic research environment where scientists of both institutions (BC-CAS and JU) work collaboratively. The university campus is located 150 km S of Prague, with stunning natural diversity, a vibrant multicultural society and a large and successful academic vibe.

Offer Requirements – Skills/Qualifications

Desirable candidates will have strong scientific credentials in ecology, microbial ecology, eDNA extraction and analyses and desire to explore bioinformatic tools. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated entry level expertise in analytical and experimental research in the area of genomics and/or geochemistry
