Full-time position
The Soil & Water Research Infrastructure (SoWa RI) is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist in aquatic/terrestrial biogeochemistry. Successful candidate is expected to conduct research in the field of the flow of nutrients and organic matter within and between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, with emphasis on the whole catchment scale. This is a challenging position, well suited for a biogeochemist with a PhD in biogeochemistry or related specialisation, with broad research interests capable of developing her/his own research activities. The candidate will work in an interdisciplinary team of chemists, limnologists, microbiologists, and soil scientists. The candidate should have an experience with data evaluation and publication. Effective management of time and resources, and good interpersonal/leadership skills are essential attributes of the successful candidate for this position. The SoWa Research Infrastructure
is a newly established unit of the Biology Centre of the Czech Academy of Sciences focused on a comprehensive interdisciplinary research of interactions between soil and water ecosystems, ecosystem processes and services on various spatiotemporal scales in the context of sustainable landscape use. The research predominantly addresses ecological topics with a significant emphasis on biomedicine and involves collaboration across disciplines. The use of diverse methodological approaches (molecular biology, genetics, taxonomy, field ecology, mathematical modelling, etc.), and a combination of analytical and holistic approaches to problem solving. Core facilities with shared equipment support all of the Centre’s scientific institutes. The SoWa RI will primarily support research aimed at understanding the key physicochemical and biological processes responsible for providing ecosystem services, nutrient cycling (particularly nitrogen and phosphorus) with emphasis on organic matter decomposition, water runoff, water purification etc. The main focus will be on ecosystems under heavy anthropogenic pressure.
Further particulars
Start date (as early as March 2017) is negotiable. The position is available until the end of 2019 and may be further extended based on the applicant’s performance and funding opportunities. The salary is highly competitive in local standards. Ceske Budejovice is a medium-sized town with 100,000 inhabitants situated 150 km south of Prague. This city has very relaxed atmosphere, and a growing community of foreign scientists at the University of South Bohemia and the Biology Centre. Three faculties and five research institutes dealing with aquatic and terrestrial biota are located on the same campus, allowing easy access to other researchers and resources. Both the town and the surrounding countryside provide numerous opportunities for research and leisure activities. Living costs are low by international standards. Courses of Czech language are provided for foreign staff to reach a basic level of proficiency in everyday situations.
